Curtis J. Bonk is Professor in the Instructional Systems Technology Department in the School of Education and Adjunct in the School of Informatics at Indiana University (IU). Curt received his B.A. in accounting from the University Wisconsin-Whitewater. After becoming sufficiently bored with his past life as a corporate controller and CPA in the mid-1980s, he relied on distance education to take correspondence and television courses as well as outreach face-to-face courses at night to qualify for graduate school. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; the latter took him just 18 months to complete. With this background, Bonk offers unique insights into the intersection of business, education, psychology, and technology.

After graduation in 1989, Curt Bonk spent three years on the faculty of West Virginia University in the department of educational psychology. He arrived at Indiana University in August 1992 exactly when the new IU School of Education building was opened to demonstrate and research the latest technology in education. A few years later, he was named the first and only faculty fellow for research in the Center for Excellent in Education (CEE) in that building. In the late 1990s, he was a founding member of the Center for Research on Learning and Technology (CRLT), which opened in the late 1990s to replace the CEE. In the first decade of the 2000s, Curt founded SurveyShare and CourseShare and created six other “share” sites such as TrainingShare, InstructorShare, PublicationShare, LibraryShare, QuizShare, and UniversityShare as an experiment. At that time, Bonk was also a Senior Research Fellow with both the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Lab within the Department of Defense as well as the Army Research Institute.  His academic interests are in online learning, massive open online courses (MOOCs) in the Global South, open education, collaborative technology, writing pedagogy and writing technologies, technology-enhanced global education, informal learning, emerging learning technologies, self-directed learning, online language learning, and blended learning.

Bonk has been honored with a number of awards, including the Burton Gorman Teaching Award from the IU School of Education in 1999, the CyberStar Award from the Indiana Information Technology Association (2002), the Most Outstanding Achievement Award from the U.S. Distance Learning Association (USDLA) (2003), an Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Wisconsin (2004), and the prestigious Mildred B. and Charles A. Wedemeyer Award for Outstanding Practitioner in Distance Education in 2014. In 2016, Curt Bonk received the AACE Fellowship Award from the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education for his leadership and service to the field. From 2012-2018, he was listed by Education Next and Education Week as a top 200 contributor to the public debate about education from more than 20,000 university-based academics. He was the first recipient of the Wilbert Hites mentoring award from IU in 2000, and, 20 years later, Curt was awarded the IU President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology in 2020 (short videotext); he was selected for both awards across the entire IU system of nine campuses. Most recently, Curt was honored to receive the David H. Jonassen Excellence in Research Award at the AECT Conference in Chicago in November 2021.

Curt is the author of nearly 400 publications, including more than 130 journal articles as well as 65 book chapters and 20 books. He has authored many widely used technology and learning related books, including Transformative Teaching Around the WorldThe World Is OpenEmpowering Online LearningThe Handbook of Blended LearningElectronic CollaboratorsAdding Some TEC-VARIETY, which is free as an e-book (http://tec-variety.com/), and MOOCs and Open Education Around the World as well as MOOCs and Open Education in the Global South (www.moocsbook.com/).

With perpetual pedagogical innovations, he has been the recipient of numerous teaching and mentoring awards from IU, including the Burton Gorman Teaching Award (1999) from the School of Education and was the initial recipient of the Wilbert Hites Mentoring award (2000), an IU campuswide award. Another notable teaching award was the Innovative Teaching Award: Teaching in a Distance Education Program from the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education, at the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System Conference (IHETS) at Ball State University in 2003. Most recently, in 2020, Curt was awarded the IU President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology, an award given across the entire IU nine campus system.

Curt Bonk has also been recognized for his research and his scholarship more generally. For instance, he was quite honored to receive the CyberStar Award from the Indiana Information Technology Association in 2002 for “Educational Contribution to IT in Higher Education” at a Oscar-like gala in Indianapolis. The following year, he was awarded “The Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual in Higher Education Award” from the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) in DC. In 2004, Curt was the recipient of an Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Wisconsin School of Education and was asked to give the keynote talk at the ceremony, “The Perfect E-Storm.” Also attesting to his research reputation, he has been a Senior Research Fellow with both the Army Research Institute (1999-2003) and the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Lab within the Department of Defense (2003-2005). In November 2017, he was fortunate to be awarded the Online Learning Journal Outstanding Research Achievement Award in Online Education from Online Learning Consortium in Orlando, Florida.

More recently, Curt Bonk was recognized for his service and leadership to the field. For instance, he was awarded the prestigious Mildred B. and Charles A. Wedemeyer Award for Outstanding Practitioner in Distance Education in 2014 at the Wisconsin Distance Teaching and Learning (DT&L) Conference; he has also hosted the award ceremony at DT&L. In November 2016, he received the AACE Fellowship Award from the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education for his leadership and service to the field. In part, this award was for his efforts in co-founding and serving on the executive committee of two conferences in 2009-2010 for AACE (Global Learn Asia-Pacific Conference and Global TIME: Technology, Innovation, Media, and Education) and serving as Co-Program Chair for the International E-Learn Conference in 2008 and then becoming Executive Committee Chair of E-Learn from 2009-2012. He remains on the E-Learn Advisory Board since 2009. Curt has been consistently listed from 2012-2018 by Education Next and Education Week as a top 100 contributor to the public debate and discourse about education from over 20,000 university-based scholars.

To help ramp up educators across the globe to teach online, Curt Bonk has designed two powerful and popular frameworks for online learning, including his R2D2 (Read-Reflect-Display-Do) model (see his 2006 book, Empowering Online Learning with 100+ activities for teaching online with the R2D2 model) and TEC-VARIETY. His book, Adding Some TEC-VARIETY: 100+ Activities for Motivating and Retaining Learners Online, available for free in English and Chinese has been downloaded more than 250,000 times from
http://tec-variety.com/. In 2010, he also recorded 27 short training videos for online teaching for the IU School of Education (i.e., Video Primers in an Online Repository for e-Teaching and Learning” (V-PORTAL)) that have been downloaded over 165,000 times.

His most recent book with 68 contributors detailing in 30 chapters what is happening in 47 countries, MOOCs and Open Education in the Global South, was published by Routledge in 2020 (for free frontmatter, see http://www.moocsbook.com/). Dr. Bonk’s widely acclaimed 2009 book, The World is Open: How Web Technology is Revolutionizing Education (a bestselling book in China, 2011), as well as his award winning 2015 book with 64 contributors and 32 chapters, MOOCs and Open Education Around the World, provide glimpses of how this more free, open, and online learning age can reach those across every educational sector, age group, and learning need. Similarly, in his groundbreaking and highly cited 2006 book Handbook of Blended Learning: Global Perspectives, Local Designs, Curt and IST alum Charles Graham assembled another massive book with 81 people contributing to 39 chapters on blended learning models and approaches from institutions and organizations around the planet. Studies show that many chapters in that book are the most cited in the field of blended learning. All these books have wide implications and applications today during pandemic. In effect, as a futurist, Curt presciently envisions technological, pedagogical, sociological, and educational change on the horizon and provides resources (i.e., books, research, training, podcasts, videos, models, presentations, etc.) to help the world community as rapid-fire changes occur.

Curt Bonk has been a designated Visiting Scholar/Professor and Adjunct Professor at 11 different institutions including Taiwan (twice), Japan, Finland (twice), Wales, Scotland, Canada, China, Australia, and the USA. He has also been interviewed for articles and reports from the Wall Street Journal Online, The New York Times, China Daily, The Boston Globe, Education Week, US News and World Reports, Delta Sky Miles Magazine, AARP, The Seoul Economic Daily, The Central Intelligence Agency, the APA Monitor, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Sydney Morning Herald, and much more.
